Ruth Waite
I'm Ruth and I live on the border between Devon and Cornwall. I have a young family and we enjoy spending time on the beautiful beaches in our area.
I have worked in the field of communication for over 20 years. After leaving college I had the opportunity to work with adults who have physical and learning disabilities, mental health problems, and/or behaviour difficulties. This experience gave me a valuable insight into living with a communication difficulty.

A wealth of experience in communication
My early experiences of finding a way to communicate with people who really struggled to get their message across inspired me to become a speech and language therapist. Following on from this, I have worked in a range of settings focusing on children’s communication, including mainstream schools and special schools. I find working with children and their families thoroughly rewarding. Having a young family has helped me to understand the needs of the parents and the pressures of family life. This means I am realistic in my advice and expectations.

Early intervention is crucial (Department for Education, 2010, Gascoigne MT (ed). (2012) Better Communication Project). The current financial climate of NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services is often unable to respond quickly, due to the demands of large caseloads. I offer quality speech and language therapy services in a way that benefits the individual child and the needs of their family. I use therapy techniques that are evidence based and I use a solution-focused approach.
